February: Peace & Conflict Resolution Month
February is Peace & Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month.

Conflict and violence displaced more than 68 million people in the past year, and half of those are children.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Rock the resilience 2019 TONIGHT!
No More Mat-Su's second annual event, Rock the Resilience, will be held on February 25 at the Glenn Massey Theater beginning at 6 p.m.

The theme of this year's event is "What is Love?" Our goal is to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault as we explore what love is and what love is not.

ROSES FOR ROTARY

Our rose fundraiser is in full swing to support our Rotary Youth Exchange program. We have ordered 500 dozen roses.  Please sell at least 10 dozen to ensure our fundraiser is a success!

Williwaw Park & Playground
This last Tuesday, a number of Rotarians and members of the Williwaw community testified at the Mat Su Borough Assembly meeting in favor of the transfer of a lot in Williwaw for the building of a park and playground.  This transfer is the first major step for our Rotary Club to proceed with building a playground in Williwaw this summer.  We are Building Better Communities!  Thank you to all the Rotarians that have supported this project.
international service
In December, our Club and members of our Club donated over $2,000 to support the building of wells and bathrooms in Cambodia through One Degree Forward.  Pam and Jerry corresponded with the founder Tim Ellison and wanted to use this as the Club’s international service project for the year. Spirit of youth nominee: NMM Youth Board
No More Mat-Su's Youth-led Board has been nominated for a Spirit of Youth Humanitarian Award to recognize their local work to prevent and reduce domestic violence and sexual assault in the Mat-Su.

Spirit of Youth is dedicated to creating, promoting and recognizing youth involvement in communities across Alaska. Each young person or group who is nominated receives a congratulations packet from Spirit of Youth and a certificate, which is presented at a public gathering. Nominees are then eligible to be selected for the Spirit of Youth Award each year. Eight nominees are chosen by the Spirit of Youth Teen Advisory Council to receive the award. Group recipients receive a grant to support their efforts.

Stay tuned for more information about how this group of young people is being recognized for their hard work and dedication.
