April: Maternal & Child Health Month
April is Maternal & Baby Health Month.

Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger.

We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation - all of which can be prevented.

Williwaw Park & Playground
The Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club spawned the concept of a playground  from a discussion with the executive director of the Mat-Su Health Foundation a couple years ago.  Ms. Ripley pointed out that the challenged  Williwaw neighborhood didn’t have a playground, nor could the kids safely maneuver Bogard Road to the newly finished inclusive playground at Newcomb Family Park on Wasilla Lake.

Next, Rotary was fortunate to have befriended Rachel Sayen Lambert, a professional Enrolled Agent and resident of Williwaw.   She created the 501(c)3 organization to, in part, receive grants and own assets - Families for the Improvement of Safety & Health, Inc. (FISH).   Rachel became a member of WSRC last year to strengthen the bond between Williwaw and the experienced 53 women and men of the Rotary Club - we build a better community and world.   She is a professional who was a perfect fit to become a Rotarian.

Rachel has now secured the $40,000 grant from Mat-Su Trails and Parks for the construction of the playground. Coffman Engineering is donating professional design services and other organizations are also providing both cash funding and in-kind work.
