February: Peace & Conflict Resolution Month
February is Peace & Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month.

Conflict and violence displaced more than 68 million people in the past year, and half of those are children.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Rock the resilience 2019
No More Mat-Su's second annual event, Rock the Resilience, will be held on February 25 at the Glenn Massey Theater beginning at 6 p.m.

The theme of this year's event is "What is Love?" Our goal is to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault as we explore what love is and what love is not.

Rotaract update

The Mat Su Valley Rotaract Club has a new president – Tasha Talvi.  Tasha is a former Rotary youth exchange student.  She spent last year in Brazil and is currently attending UAA Mat Su College.  She is looking forward to revitalizing the Rotaract Club.  Please help her by referring young adults ages 18-30 to Tasha.  Let’s do what we can to support the energetic young adults in our community that believe in Service Above Self.  You may contact Tasha at tashatalvi@gmail.com or text her at 907-782-5016.

Interact update

The Mat Su Valley Interact Club is doing great activities in our community.  Wyatt Parker is the new president of the club and is looking for other students from 8th-12th grade to participate and give back to their community.  Please contact Betti Jo Walters (Sunset Club) or Lucas Parker if you know of students that would like to be involved in the Interact Club.
Spirit of youth nominee: NMM Youth Board
No More Mat-Su's Youth-led Board has been nominated for a Spirit of Youth Humanitarian Award to recognize their local work to prevent and reduce domestic violence and sexual assault in the Mat-Su.

Spirit of Youth is dedicated to creating, promoting and recognizing youth involvement in communities across Alaska. Each young person or group who is nominated receives a congratulations packet from Spirit of Youth and a certificate, which is presented at a public gathering. Nominees are then eligible to be selected for the Spirit of Youth Award each year. Eight nominees are chosen by the Spirit of Youth Teen Advisory Council to receive the award. Group recipients receive a grant to support their efforts.

Stay tuned for more information about how this group of young people is being recognized for their hard work and dedication.
